The Stables Building was completed in 1744 as a cavalier's house with horse stables and the palace kitchen. It is a historically protected building and with its architecture and style forms part of the Dornburg castle complex.
In 1920, two years after the abdication of the Grand Duke, the state of Thuringia offered the Stables Building to the Weimar Bauhaus as a teaching workshop. The ceramics workshop was completed that same year and began operations at the beginning of October 1920. Gerhard Marcks' workshop and studio were located on the ground floor. The Bauhaus apprentices lived in the attic rooms on the upper floor.

The building was continuously used as a ceramics workshop until recent times. Ulrich Körting's workshop is now located in the right wing of the building. In 2019, the Bauhaus Workshop Museum opened to the public.
